The Bottle & Glass near Henley has developed a food ordering system that helps kitchen planning, reduces wasteage and, most importantly, rewards a number of regular customers with a 'VIP' service when they dine at the pub.
Nicola Atherton, who runs The Bottle & Glass with partner Tony Bebbington, said, "We have a few couples and small groups of customers who eat in the pub at least every other week. Tony suggested to one couple that, if there was anything they particularly wanted to eat next time they came in, they could let us know and we'd cook it for them, even if it wasn't on the menu that day - within reason, obviously, we're not offering to roast a swan for them!
"Those customers phoned back later in the week with a request for Dover sole and since then we've started to offer this 'bespoke' menu service to others. We probably have about a dozen customers now, who give us a few days' notice if they want something different."
She adds, "It's a way of giving something back to the customers who support the pub week in, week out. They feel we're making a special effort for them, we can plan those meals in advance and it helps to reduce food wasteage. It's a 'win win' for everyone."
